This package is for the cost conscious traveller​ who is wanting to experience the entire Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail, but would like to either self cater all their meals or self cater and transport their own luggage (Bare Bones programme).

For those with very little time, but a huge amount of energy! Think the "Timber Trail' but with amazing views and remote stunning scenery.

Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail

Start: Turoa Ski Field, MT RUAPEHU
Finish: Castlecliff Beach, Whanganui
Distance: 226 km (includes jet boat ride)
Duration: 2 – 5 days
Riding distances per day: 30 – 70km
Fitness level: Reasonable level of fitness

Riding Season: Mid November – April

Our 3-5 day packages include five trails, which are part of the National ‘Mountains-to-Sea’ Cycle Trail. Starting high on the volcanic slopes of Mt Ruapehu and winding its way via mountain, forest and river to the beach at Whanganui.

It is truly the best the region has to offer and will be some of the most memorable biking you will ever experience.

Cycle through breathtakingly varied, spectacular landscapes; visit historic sites from New Zealand’s pioneering past; canoe down the Whanganui River (optional) and complete your journey in the historic town of Whanganui. Spend each night in unique accommodation, carefully selected by us to complement your day’s pedalling.

Mountains to Sea Quick Facts

Grade:
Putting a grade on an activity is always subjective and our grading guidelines should give you a better idea of what to expect on your trip. The grade applies to the overall intensity of the journey and individual days may exceed the stated guidelines. Please refer to the individual trip itinerary for daily distances and descriptions.

Moderate:
You can expect longer distances and some challenging days. This holiday is perfect for regular cyclists who lead a fit and active lifestyle.
Distance per Day: 30-70 km

The Mountain Bike Station offers itineraries of two to five days cycling for the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail. Each trip includes unique overnight accommodation, a detailed information pack, route notes and map for the group leader, along with door to door bag transfers, and transfers from Ohakune to Turoa Ski Field, Ohakune to Horopito and Whanganui to Ohakune on the final day (including baggage & bikes).

Accommodation:
Accommodation is comfortable and will meet all of your basic needs. These may include Hostel Style accommodation and limited basic B&Bs. Accommodation may be rustic and an ensuite or private bathroom may not always be available. Sometimes located in a remote area, the accommodation may be shared with other travellers. The friendly staff look forward to welcoming you and will ensure you have an enjoyable stay
